From Disordered to Healthy Sexuality

SEXUAL HEALTH

    LGBTQI+ Affirming Care

I have 20+ years of experience providing inclusive and affirming mental health care to individuals who identify as part of the LGTBTQI+ community. Many patients are simply seeking a provider who is open and understanding of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

In addition to traditional psychiatric evaluation and treatment, I have expertise in the following areas:

    • The impact of psychiatric medications on sexual function and body image

    • Coming out, identity issues, and internalized homophobia

    • The effect of HIV and HIV medications on mental health

    • Psychiatric clearance for adults seeking gender-affirming treatments and procedures

    • Addiction and its impact on sex and mental health

    • The influence of race, culture, and religion on sexual identity and behaviors

    Hypersexuality (aka Sex Addiction)

I have expertise in the area of hypersexuality, having served as the academic editor of a professional journal related to this topic. When patients struggle with increased sexual drive, we will work together to explore the relationship of the individual to his/her sexual behaviors and better understand the impact such behaviors have on all aspects of life. Critical to this work is not pathologizing diverse practices and understanding how sexual behaviors manifest within complex relationships, trauma, background, and societal norms.

    Sexual Diversity

The medical field has historically taken a conservative approach to sexuality and sexual behaviors, and until recently, most medical schools lacked content related to basic human sexual development. I have 20+ years of experience working with individuals who represent a broad range of sexual behaviors and identities and have developed curriculums for medical and mental health professionals. In my practice, I aim to help individuals assess whether their sexual behavior is honest, consenting, and consistent with their non-sexual values.

    Sexual Dysfunctions

I treat individuals for the following conditions attributed to mental health problems:

    • Male Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder

    • Female Hypoactive Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder

    • Premature Ejaculation

    • Delayed Ejaculation

    • Erectile Disorder

    • Genitopelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder

I work with a variety of medical professionals (Ob/Gyn, Endocrine, Urology, and sex therapists) to provide holistic and comprehensive care.

  • Sexual Disorders

Paraphilias are defined as sexual arousal to inanimate or non-consenting objects/individuals. For individuals who have legal problems related to their sexual behaviors, please consult my forensic services page. At the current time, I do not offer ongoing treatment for sexual disorders, but I do work with and can refer to a range of professionals who can help.
